Altamont Living Museum
102 South Main Street, Altamont
Now used as a theater for live music, dramatic performances and fine art exhibitions, this 1912 church features luminous Tiffany stained glass windows, curved oak pews and a wooden floor that helps accentuate each note.
Alwerdt's Gardens

Step into paradise along the four acres of garden paths decorated with flowers, unusual perennials, fragrant herbs, trees and shrubs.
Ballard Nature Center
5253 East U.S. Highway 40, Altamont
Stroll through butterfly and hummingbird gardens, walk along nature trails and explore the nature center with its many exhibits. Be sure not to miss the small cemetery containing graves of pioneers.
Ben Winter Museum
1815 East 900Th Avenue, Altamont
Explore train and industrial history in this rural museum. A steam engine from 1894 and a threshing machine from 1881 are two of the featured items. Other items include steam, gas and oil train engines. Open by appointment only. 618/483-6665
Dr. Charles M. Wright House
North Main And Jackson Streets, Altamont
Built in 1889 by Dr. Wright, this stately Renaissance Revival home holds three generations of Wright family furnishings and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Open Sundays from 2-4 pm June through August, and by appointment throughout the year by calling ahead. Groups of 10 or more should call ahead. 618/483-6397
The Cross At The Crossroads
Interstates 57 And 70, Effingham
This 198-foot cross, located along one of the country's most traveled interstate corridors, has an arm span of 113 feet. It's made of 848 yards of concrete and has nearly 34 tons of reinforced steel footings in its foundation. The structure has more than 180 total tons of steel.
Historic Courthouse
Jefferson Avenue And Third Street, Effingham
Built in 1871, this courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On the lawn, you'll find a monument to Lord Effingham.
Lake Sara
Route 32-33 To Lake Sara Road, Effingham
Lake Sara offers the outdoor enthusiast water skiing, swimming, camping and fishing. Relax or swim at the large sandy beach. Picnic pavilions are available.
My Garage R&D Center/Corvette Museum
North U.S. Highway 45, Exit 162, Effingham
A collection of classic and low-mileage Corvettes and Corvette memorabilia is displayed in a 1950s storefront setting. Jukebox music completes the mood.
Sculpture On The Avenues
Jefferson, Washington, Section And Fayette Avenues, Downtown Effingham This exhibit features the work of sculptors from throughout the Midwest. The various pieces are displayed on sidewalks in the downtown area. The exhibit changes every July.
